Name: Peter Bell

What do you do at Backbone?
I have recently been promoted to Sales Manager. My role involves running the New Business and Customer Success Teams as we work to generate new customers and continue to support and service our existing customers. I also have an active role representing Sales and Customer Success within our Senior Management Team, which allows me to champion the customer at board level and means I can get involved in other areas of the business to help drive overall success.

What do you like best about your role at Backbone?
Team development.  I get great satisfaction from being able to help people be successful and rising through the ranks.

What qualification’s you bring?
I have 10 years’ experience in the industry and I’ve worked in almost every role so I have a good perspective of what good looks like in Customer Service, Sales and Management. I ensure I keep abreast with best practice while attending as much training as I can.  I’ve been on more training courses than I could count! But I always aim for one key take out from every session.

What qualifications are you working on next?
As a business we are constantly looking to challenge the way we work and how we can improve ourselves and our departments. With this in mind the next qualification that’s coming up for me is a business management course at the Cranfield University Business School. It’s part of the training for all senior managers here at Backbone Connect and is really popular because of its focus on leadership tactics, creating and managing high performance teams and the better understanding of core management concepts.

Outside of formal training I often spend my free time learning more about whatever I find interesting from History, Space, Politics and anything in the Tech world. We are all now in a fortunate position where there are so many ways to consume content that we can slot it in to any part of our day. TedTalks on the tube, Audiobooks while I’m cycling, there are so many ways to improve yourself and we have access to all this great content.

Who do you report into?
The two business owners Dave and Mike. They are ‘hands-on’ Directors who are passionate about the business and the IT industry, it’s great to have that level of support and knowledge alongside you.

If you had one week to live, what would you do?
I think it would be a holiday with all my close friends and family. One big last hurrah with no stress and lots of good people around me.

What three items would you take on a desert island?
Surface Pro, the Bike & Unlimited Beer.

What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod/phone?
Probably Mumford & Sons cover of The Boxer, though I listen to a range of music.

Where’s your favourite place to eat?
Currently, Le Relais De Venise – can’t beat some good Steak and Chips.

What do you like to do most in your free time?
Cycle, socialise, read, game and I’m known to occasionally visit the pub.

What’s the best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received?
I once gave my brother a polystyrene bird on a stick..

What do you love the smell of most?

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
Probably a new language, though being Scottish I’m often told I need to learn English first.

If you could take three months off work to travel, where would you go? 
I like the idea of travelling around Asia, there is a such a variety of things to see there, plus the amazing food and the people.

What Technology has caught your eye?
Home Automation, VR, The Internet of Things and I’m really interested to see how 3D printing will change the manufacturing.

What do you like most about working at Backbone Connect?
Working with the latest technologies in IT, but mostly the people.  It’s a great atmosphere and we have a lot of fun.
